The story

Green Man Festival in Crickhowell

An independent folk and alternative music festival held each August at Glanusk Park near Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons, running since 2003. Best known for burning a large wicker Green Man effigy on the festival's final night, it has grown from a 300-person gathering into one of Wales's best-established music festivals.

Green Man began in 2003 as a one-day gathering of around three hundred people at Craig-y-Nos Castle in the Brecon Beacons, founded by Jo Bartlett and Danny Hagan around a shared interest in folk and psychedelic music outside the mainstream festival circuit.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival closes each year by burning a purpose-built wicker Green Man effigy, a tradition drawn from the leaf-faced Green Man figure found in British church carvings and folklore, giving the event a distinctive ritual absent from most UK music festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Its Glanusk Park site sits on genuinely hilly working farmland in the Brecon Beacons rather than flat showground fields, with the Black Mountains visible across the valley, and the festival has remained independently owned since its 2003 founding rather than being absorbed into a major promoter's portfolio
