Durham Miners' Gala in Durham

Durham's Big Meeting brings hand-painted lodge banners and brass bands through the city streets to the old Racecourse for speeches, followed by a miners' service in Durham Cathedral. Running since 1871 and organised by the Durham Miners' Association, the gala has outlasted the coalfield it commemorates and remains one of Europe's largest trade union gatherings.

Durham's Miners' Gala began in 1871, organised by the Durham Miners' Association two years after the county's first miners' union had formed, and it has continued, with gaps for two world wars, a handful of strikes and the coronavirus pandemic, into the present day.
