Leeds West Indian Carnival in Leeds

Leeds West Indian Carnival brings a costumed procession, steel bands and sound systems through Chapeltown and Harehills each August bank holiday, starting and finishing at Potternewton Park. Founded in 1967 by Arthur France and fellow organisers, it is widely credited as the longest continuously running authentic Caribbean carnival in Europe.

Leeds West Indian Carnival began in 1967, when Arthur France, a university student originally from Nevis, proposed staging the first Caribbean-style outdoor carnival organised by people of Caribbean heritage anywhere in Europe.
