The world's largest military airshow, held each July at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire since the event moved there in 1985, tracing back to a modest 1971 gathering at North Weald Airfield in Essex. Guinness World Records recognised its 2003 edition as the largest military airshow ever staged, with 535 aircraft in attendance, and the show has hosted genuine aviation firsts including the B-2A Spirit's first display outside the United States.

The Royal International Air Tattoo traces its origins to 1971, when a small gathering of just over a hundred aircraft assembled at North Weald Airfield in Essex, organised by Paul Bowen and Timothy Prince, both civil aviation air traffic controllers, alongside Air Marshal Sir Denis Crowley-Milling.
