Sheffield DocFest in Sheffield

Britain's largest documentary festival and the third largest of its kind in the world, held each June in Sheffield since its first edition in 1994. Combining public screenings with a substantial industry marketplace of pitching sessions and funding meetings, it grew from a 1990 proposal by BBC producer Peter Symes for a dedicated forum for British documentary filmmakers.

Sheffield DocFest originated from an idea developed in 1990 by Peter Symes, a documentary producer working at BBC TV Features in Bristol, who wanted to create a genuine forum where British documentary filmmakers could gather to debate and discuss their craft rather than simply screen finished work in isolation from one another.
