The story

Latitude Festival in Southwold

A multi-art-form festival held each July at Henham Park near Southwold, Suffolk, founded in 2006 by director Melvin Benn to combine music with theatre, cabaret, poetry and literature. Its first edition drew ten thousand people for headline sets from Editors, Pet Shop Boys and Snow Patrol, on an estate owned by the same family since 1544.

Latitude Festival opened in 2006 on the grounds of Henham Park, a 4,200-acre estate near the Suffolk coastal town of Southwold that has been owned by the Rous family since 1544, with parts of the estate's history stretching back more than eight centuries and its Regency-era country house rebuilt in the 1820s.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Latitude was built from its first edition around a genuinely multi-art-form structure, with poetry, literature, comedy and full theatrical productions running alongside headline music rather than as minor sideshows, a founding ambition distinct from festivals that add token non-music stages after establishing a purely musical identity

02

The mystery stays covered

Its Henham Park setting, an estate owned by the Rous family since 1544 with parts of its history stretching over eight centuries, gives the festival a landscaped, historic parkland character uncommon among UK festivals built on flat agricultural sites
