Boomtown Fair in Winchester
An immersive, narrative-driven music festival held on the Matterley Estate near Winchester each August since 2011, having launched in 2009 at sites in Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire. Its 1,250-acre site is built as a fictional city of eight districts with its own mayoral elections and passports, spanning genres from reggae and punk to jungle and techno.
Boomtown Fair began in 2009, created by organisers known within the festival as Rutherford and Mitchell, who had grown up around the UK's free party and festival scenes and felt too many music genres were being overlooked by conventional festival programming built around headline-driven guitar and pop bills.
