The story

Alma Highland Festival and Games in Alma

The Alma Highland Festival and Games is a three-day Scottish heritage festival held every May on the campus of Alma College in Alma, Michigan, a city nicknamed Scotland, USA. Now in its late fifties as an annual event, it brings together more than twenty clans for heavyweight Scottish athletics, highland dance and piping competitions, a tartan parade, and whisky tasting.

Its Highland games and college-town setting make it a strong cultural row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Alma's festival is built around a genuine Scottish-heritage identity the city has cultivated for decades, complete with the nickname Scotland, USA, and it draws serious competitive fields rather than staging Scottish culture as pure spectacle

02

The mystery stays covered

The Great Lakes Scottish Heavyweight competition includes both a men's professional division and a women's invitational, the piping and drumming events are sanctioned by the Midwest Pipe Band Association, and the highland dance competition runs a full Great Lakes Open Championship alongside a Midwest regional qualifier for nationals

03

The city starts moving

A Queen of Scots and Wee Queens program, described by organizers as the face of the festival, has anchored the event for more than fifty years, and the closing Mass Bands performance, every pipe band on the field together, gives the weekend a genuinely large-scale finale
