Anacortes Arts Festival in Anacortes

Since 1962, the first weekend of August has turned downtown Anacortes, Washington's Commercial Avenue into an open-air gallery for the Anacortes Arts Festival, one of the state's longest-running juried art shows. What began with 107 artists along two city blocks and three hundred dollars in seed money has grown into a weekend drawing roughly 80,000 visitors to view fine art, craft booths and live music.

Anacortes Arts Festival traces its origin to a conversation at Perry's Skyline Restaurant in the early 1960s, where a handful of local boosters, backed by the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce and three hundred dollars, decided the fishing and mill town on Fidalgo Island needed a summer draw built around art rather than industry.
