Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival in Astoria
The Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival has celebrated the North Coast's Nordic immigrant heritage for six decades, gathering more than a dozen Nordic musical, dance and theater groups at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds each third weekend of June for handcrafts, imports, traditional foods and a Sankta Lucia celebration.
Astoria's position at the mouth of the Columbia River made it a natural landing point for Scandinavian immigrants in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many of them drawn by the same fishing and forestry industries that had sustained their families in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
