FisherPoets Gathering in Astoria
The FisherPoets Gathering brings nearly a hundred poets, songwriters and storytellers from commercial fishing communities on both US coasts to Astoria's pubs, restaurants and galleries each last weekend of February, an event running since 1998 and recognized by the Library of Congress as a Local Legacy project.
Commercial fishing generates its own literature, though it rarely gets called that: stories passed between deckhands on long trips, verses composed to pass time on the water, songs sung in canneries and processing plants.
