The story

Armadillo Christmas Bazaar in Austin

The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar is Austin's longest-running holiday art market, launched in 1976 at the Armadillo World Headquarters music venue partly to help keep the struggling venue open. Now marking its 50th season, the December event has moved through several Austin venues before settling at the Palmer Events Center in 2010, pairing juried fine art and handmade gifts with live music.

Its long-running blend of art, music, and holiday shopping gives it distinct identity.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The event's origin is tied to a specific act of venue rescue: Bruce Willenzik, the Armadillo World Headquarters' kitchen manager, and musician Lucinda Williams sparked the idea in 1975, and the first bazaar launched in 1976 with 50 vendors to help keep the legendary venue, home to early performances by Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, and Elvis Costello, from closing

02

The mystery stays covered

Though the effort bought the venue only a few more years before its 1980 closure, the bazaar itself outlived it by decades, carrying the venue's countercultural, artist-first spirit forward through repeated relocations

03

The city starts moving

Reaching its 50th season places it among the longest continuously running holiday markets of its kind in Texas, still built around a juried selection of fine artists rather than mass-produced holiday goods
