The story

Artscape in Baltimore

Artscape, billed as the largest free arts festival in America, has run since 1982 and relocated in 2025 from its longtime home near the Maryland Institute College of Art to downtown Baltimore, moving its traditional mid-July date to Memorial Day weekend. The city-run festival features a juried artisan market, the Sondheim Prize for visual art, multiple music stages, and film programming.

Artscape began in 1982 as a city-run initiative to give Baltimore residents a genuinely major, entirely free arts festival, and over more than four decades it grew into an event that organizers and press consistently describe as the largest free arts festival in America.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Artscape's guest-performer history is genuinely major-league for a free municipal festival, past acts have included Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and Isaac Hayes, a lineup more typical of a ticketed arena show than a city-run street festival

02

The mystery stays covered

It has also become a launching pad for a recognizable piece of Baltimore folk art: the Baltimore Rock Opera Society's Brothership, a converted 1988 Saab 900 built into an elaborate art car, first appeared at Artscape in 2010 and has remained associated with the festival since

03

The city starts moving

The 2025 move to downtown and Memorial Day weekend, part of the city's Downtown Rise Initiative, marks the biggest change in the festival's structure in more than four decades, effectively relaunching an established brand in a new setting
