The story

Baltimore Washington One Caribbean Carnival in Baltimore

The Baltimore/Washington ONE Carnival, run jointly by the Caribbean American Carnival Association of Baltimore and the DC Caribbean Carnival Committee, brings a Caribbean-style Parade of Bands to Druid Hill Park each July, opening with a pre-dawn Jouvert celebration. Dating to roughly 1983, the carnival is set to mark its forty-fourth year in 2027 and has drawn crowds above thirty-five thousand.

The Caribbean American Carnival Association of Baltimore built its carnival in partnership with the DC Caribbean Carnival Committee, producing what is formally known as the Baltimore/Washington ONE Carnival with support from the Mayor of Baltimore City and the city's Office of Promotion and the Arts.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The carnival's joint Baltimore-Washington organizational structure is unusual among American Caribbean carnivals, pairing the Caribbean American Carnival Association of Baltimore with the DC Caribbean Carnival Committee to produce a single event, reflecting how closely the two cities' Caribbean diaspora communities are connected rather than treating Baltimore's celebration as fully separate from Washington's own

02

The mystery stays covered

Its three-part structure, a pre-dawn Jouvert paint-and-music celebration, a full Parade of Bands with steel pan and soca music trucks, and a closing Sunday Family Day Festival, gives the event a fuller arc than a single-day parade, while its roughly forty-year run traces back to the early 1980s, making it one of the longer-established Caribbean carnivals on the US East Coast outside New York and Florida
