Lummi Stommish Water Festival in Bellingham
War canoe races on the water are one of the central draws of Lummi Stommish Water Festival, alongside a veterans parade that remains part of the festival's public heart. Sla-Hal stick games and a salmon barbecue fill out the weekend gathering. The Lummi Nation built the event originally to welcome home its veterans.
You feel this one first in the air: the chop of war canoes pulling across the water, the beat of song and dance, the smell of salmon on the grill, and families moving between the shoreline and the parade route as if the whole place is keeping time together.
