Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham
The Sidewalk Film Festival is an annual independent film festival held in Birmingham, Alabama's Theatre District since 1999, screening films across venues including the restored 1927 Alabama Theatre and the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Now run by the nonprofit that also merged with the SHOUT LGBTQ Film Festival in 2010 and opened the permanent Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema in 2019, the festival was recognized by TIME Magazine as a top festival for the rest of us.
In 1999, three Birmingham film enthusiasts, Kelli McCall Franklin, Wayne Franklin, and Erik Jambor, incorporated a nonprofit called the Alabama Moving Image Association and launched a festival in the city's Theatre District.
