The story

Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham

The Sidewalk Film Festival is an annual independent film festival held in Birmingham, Alabama's Theatre District since 1999, screening films across venues including the restored 1927 Alabama Theatre and the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Now run by the nonprofit that also merged with the SHOUT LGBTQ Film Festival in 2010 and opened the permanent Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema in 2019, the festival was recognized by TIME Magazine as a top festival for the rest of us.

In 1999, three Birmingham film enthusiasts, Kelli McCall Franklin, Wayne Franklin, and Erik Jambor, incorporated a nonprofit called the Alabama Moving Image Association and launched a festival in the city's Theatre District.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sidewalk has built its identity around independent film specifically, honoring figures like writer-director John Sayles and producer Maggie Renzi in 2006 for more than two decades of collaboration on acclaimed indie films, and giving actor John C

03

The city starts moving

The festival's 2010 merger with the SHOUT LGBTQ Film Festival, founded in 2006, folded a dedicated queer film showcase directly into the main festival weekend rather than keeping it separate

04

The water draws everyone in

In 2019, Sidewalk opened a permanent home, the Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema in the historic Pizitz Building, giving the festival's programming, education, and community outreach work a year-round venue rather than confining it to a single annual weekend
