The story

Boston Arts Festival in Boston

The Boston Arts Festival is a free, two-day outdoor showcase of Boston-area visual and performing artists held each September at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park on Boston Harbor. Founded in 2003 under Mayor Thomas Menino to launch the city's Open Studios season, the juried event features painting, photography, ceramics, jewelry, and sculpture alongside live music on the Waterfront Stage, drawing tens of thousands of visitors rain or shine.

Long before Boston built the gleaming waterfront parks it has today, a different kind of art scene took root a few blocks inland, in the Public Garden.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets the Boston Arts Festival apart is its role as a launchpad: since 2003 it has kicked off the city's autumn Open Studios season, giving working artists direct access to a waterfront crowd instead of a gallery back room

02

The mystery stays covered

Every piece must be handmade by the artist standing behind the booth, with no imports, no mass production, and no printed T-shirts, so visitors meet the painters, potters, jewelers, and sculptors who made what they are selling

03

The city starts moving

The event traces its lineage to the original 1952 Boston Art Festival in the Public Garden, which gave Jewish-American and other emerging artists shut out of the city's established museums a public stage, helping seed the Boston Expressionism movement

04

The water draws everyone in

Since 2016 the Beacon Hill Art Walk has run the juried show
