First Night Boston in Boston

First Night Boston is Boston's traditional New Year's Eve arts celebration, held citywide on December 31 since 1976. Historically it combined free, alcohol-free performances of music, dance, and comedy with outdoor ice sculptures on Boston Common and Copley Square, a First Night procession, and fireworks over Boston Harbor at midnight. The original nonprofit organization closed in 2013 for financial reasons, and the City of Boston has run a scaled-back version since 2015.

On the last night of 1975, a small group of Boston artists led by Clara Wainwright decided the city needed a different kind of New Year's Eve, one built around art instead of alcohol.
