The story

Saint Anthony's Feast in Boston

Saint Anthony's Feast is a four-day Italian-American religious festival held every August in Boston's North End, begun in 1919 by immigrants from Montefalcione, in Avellino, Italy. Billed by organizers as the largest Italian religious festival in New England and once called the Feast of all Feasts by National Geographic, it combines Catholic Masses and processions honoring Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Lucy with street food, live music, and parades through Endicott and Thacher Streets.

In 1919, a wave of Italian immigrants from the small town of Montefalcione, in the Avellino province of southern Italy, brought a devotion with them when they settled in Boston's North End: an annual public procession honoring Saint Anthony of Padua, the Franciscan friar venerated as a finder of lost things and a protector of the poor.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes Saint Anthony's Feast is its scale and endurance: more than a century after Montefalcionesi immigrants first carried a statue of Saint Anthony through the North End, the Saint Anthony and Saint Lucy Societies, with roughly 150 and 100 members respectively, still stage a four-day celebration built around a Grand Procession that can last about ten hours, with the statue carried by rotating teams of eight men through streets strung with lights while devotees pin cash donations to ribbons in thanks for answered prayers

02

The mystery stays covered

The Feast also folds in a second, related celebration of Santa Lucia, patron saint of eyesight, on its final day, and around 100 food pushcarts turn the neighborhood into an open-air Italian street market for the entire weekend
