The story

South Boston St Patrick's Day Parade in Boston

The South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade, formally the South Boston St. Patrick's Day/Evacuation Day Parade, is one of the oldest and largest St. Patrick's Day parades in the United States, organized by the Allied War Veterans Council of South Boston since 1901. Held on the Sunday closest to March 17 through the streets of South Boston, it doubles as Evacuation Day, commemorating the British military's withdrawal from Boston in 1776.

On March 17, 1776, after an eleven-month siege, British General William Howe made a decision that would eventually give South Boston two holidays for the price of one: rather than risk a repeat of the bloody Battle of Bunker Hill, he withdrew his army and navy from Boston, retreating to Nova Scotia after George Washington's Continental Army fortified Dorchester Heights overnight with cannons hauled overland from Fort Ticonderoga.
