The story

Brattleboro Literary Festival in Brattleboro

The Brattleboro Literary Festival brings novelists, poets and nonfiction writers to downtown Brattleboro each October for a free weekend of readings, panels and conversations. Since its founding, the festival has hosted more than 900 authors, including Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award and Newbery Medal winners, in a town with a long literary history of its own.

Every October, the small Vermont town of Brattleboro fills its downtown churches, bookstores and community halls with novelists, poets and journalists for a weekend built entirely around the written word.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Nearly all events are free and open to the public, an unusual commitment for a festival that regularly features major national literary prize winners, and it reflects the organizers' goal of making serious literature accessible to a small-town audience rather than a festival-circuit crowd

02

The mystery stays covered

Brattleboro itself has a genuine literary pedigree, having been home over the years to writers including Rudyard Kipling and Mary Wilkins Freeman, which gives the festival a sense of continuity rather than importing prestige from outside

03

The city starts moving

Programming mixes traditional author readings with livelier formats like poetry slams and a Literary Death Match, a competitive reading event that pushes writers to perform rather than simply recite
