The story

Rooster Days Festival in Broken Arrow

Rooster Days Festival is Broken Arrow's oldest annual celebration, held each May since 1931, when the local chamber of commerce created a market day for farmers to sell surplus roosters. What started as a poultry-culling day grew into a four-day festival with carnival rides, food trucks, a downtown parade, a 5K and one-mile fun run, and a vendor marketplace, all presented today by TTCU Federal Credit Union.

Rooster Days began in the spring of 1931 as a practical solution to an agricultural problem.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rooster Days earns its claim as Oklahoma's oldest festival from an origin story that has nothing to do with roosters crowing and everything to do with 1930s farm economics

02

The mystery stays covered

In 1931, area farmers were culling excess roosters from their flocks to protect the local infertile-egg market, and the chamber of commerce turned that culling day into a community event, offering a premium price per pound and prizes for the biggest and noisiest bird

03

The city starts moving

Roosters disappeared from local flocks decades ago, replaced by horses that now dominate the parade route, but the name and the spirit of a town-wide spring gathering endured

04

The water draws everyone in

A special dinner still honors residents born in Broken Arrow, or who have lived there, fifty years or more, some traveling from other states or countries to attend
