The story

Festival of Fools in Burlington

The Festival of Fools fills Burlington's Church Street Marketplace and City Hall Park with free outdoor circus and busking each summer. Organized by Burlington City Arts since 2007, the two-day event brings touring acrobats, jugglers, magicians and comedians from around the world to perform on multiple downtown stages, with tips replacing ticket prices.

Every summer, Burlington's Church Street Marketplace trades its usual mix of shoppers and diners for jugglers, acrobats and comedians performing in tight circles of onlookers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival runs on the traveling busker model rather than a fixed lineup: performers draw crowds into a circle on the pedestrian mall, build tension with a mix of comedy and physical stunts, then pass a hat instead of charging admission

02

The mystery stays covered

That format pulls in circuit performers who play similar street-arts festivals across North America and Europe, so Burlington gets acts with genuine international pedigree despite being a small city

03

The city starts moving

The closing King or Queen of Fools vote, decided by audience applause, gives the weekend a communal, competitive edge that regulars look forward to each year

04

The water draws everyone in

Because the marketplace is already car-free, dozens of acts can run simultaneously within a few blocks, letting visitors wander between a sword-swallower, a unicyclist and a children's magic show without ever leaving downtown
