The story

Cambridge Carnival in Cambridge

Cambridge Carnival is an annual Caribbean-style carnival held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, marking its 32nd year in 2026 with a parade on Saturday, September 13, alongside a week of related events including a Carnival Jamboree, Pan in the Park steel-pan showcases, and a Panorama competition. Rooted in the masquerade and steelpan traditions of Trinidad and Tobago, it celebrates Afro-Caribbean and African American heritage, emancipation, and community resistance through costumed masquerade bands, live soca and calypso music, and Caribbean food.

Cambridge Carnival International was founded in 1994, growing out of Cambridge's Caribbean immigrant community and its wish to bring Trinidad-style carnival traditions to New England.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Cambridge Carnival stands out for treating carnival as an act of historical memory rather than pure spectacle: 2026's theme, The Cultural Revolution Starts Here and Never Ends, explicitly ties the festival's Trinidadian roots, where enslaved Africans created carnival celebrations in defiance of their oppressors, to Massachusetts's own revolutionary history as the state marks its 250th anniversary

02

The mystery stays covered

Now in its fourth decade, the festival has weathered real setbacks, including cancellation of its 2019 parade over gun-violence concerns and a fully virtual edition during the 2020 pandemic, and has rebuilt into a multi-week program spanning a Carnival Jamboree, steelpan Panorama showcase, and the flagship parade, led by an all-volunteer board under president Nicola Williams
