The story

Camden International Film Festival in Camden

The Camden International Film Festival is an annual documentary film festival held each September across Camden, Rockport, and Rockland, Maine. Founded in 2005 by Camden native Ben Fowlie and run since 2016 by the nonprofit Points North Institute, it screens around 60 documentary features and shorts and pairs them with the Points North Forum, a professional development conference for nonfiction filmmakers.

The Camden International Film Festival began as one person's answer to a gap he noticed in his hometown.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is an Academy Awards qualifying festival for the Documentary Short Film category, meaning its Best Documentary Short winner qualifies for Oscar consideration, a distinction that draws figures from major studios and networks to a town of a few thousand people

02

The mystery stays covered

Screenings unfold across historic venues, including the Camden Opera House and the Strand Theatre in Rockland, connected by festival shuttles, so the event doubles as a tour of the Midcoast's small-town cultural architecture

03

The city starts moving

Past programming has included Academy-funded retrospectives and a custom-built drive-in cinema constructed for the pandemic-era 2020 edition
