The story

Louisiana Fur and Wildlife Festival in Cameron

The Louisiana Fur and Wildlife Festival in Cameron, self-described as one of the oldest and coldest festivals in the state, has run each January since 1955 to honor the parish's rotating native industries. It combines a King Fur pageant, muskrat and nutria skinning contests, duck and goose calling, skeet shooting and a gumbo cook-off with a sister-festival exchange with Maryland's National Outdoor Show.

The Louisiana Fur and Wildlife Festival began in 1955 after Cameron Parish trapper Leon Hebert, then fifty-two years old with twenty-five years of trapping experience, was sent to compete at the National Fur Skinning Contest in Cambridge, Maryland, a challenge issued by that town's own congressman to Louisiana representative Theo Ashton Thompson.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few American festivals are staged deliberately in the depths of winter, but Cameron's event leans into its January timing as a point of pride, self-branding as one of the oldest and coldest festivals in Louisiana

02

The mystery stays covered

Its industry-honoring structure, rotating recognition among cattle, energy, shrimp, hunting and wildlife, fur and alligator, oyster, fishing and crabbing each year, and its formal sister-festival relationship with Maryland's National Outdoor Show, give it an unusually deliberate, almost diplomatic civic structure compared to most single-theme harvest festivals
