Vandalia Gathering in Charleston
The Vandalia Gathering is a festival of old-time and bluegrass music held every Memorial Day weekend at the West Virginia State Capitol Complex in Charleston. Established in 1977, the free three-day event features fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar contests, the popular Liar's Contest, evening concerts in the State Theater, dozens of artisan and food vendors, and dance demonstrations spanning Irish, Scottish, Morris, Swiss, Croatian, and Appalachian traditions with audience participation encouraged.
Every Memorial Day weekend since 1977, the grounds of the West Virginia State Capitol Complex in Charleston stop being purely governmental space and become, for three days, a stage for old-time and bluegrass music.
