The story

Chicago Pride Parade in Chicago

Held the last Sunday of June, the Chicago Pride Parade is one of the oldest Pride events in the world, tracing back to a 1970 march from Washington Square Park to the Water Tower. Now drawing more than a million spectators along its Lakeview and Uptown route, it is organized separately from the earlier Pride Fest street festival held the same month.

Its scale and civic history make it essential Illinois Pride coverage.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Chicago Pride Parade began on Saturday, June 27, 1970, as a march from Washington Square Park, known locally as Bughouse Square, toward the Water Tower, with participants spontaneously continuing on to Civic Center Plaza, making it one of the oldest Pride parades in the world

02

The mystery stays covered

Longtime director Richard Pfeiffer organized the parade for decades until his death in 2019, after which the all-volunteer nonprofit PRIDEChicago took over

03

The city starts moving

Attendance has grown dramatically, from roughly 500,000 at the 40th parade in 2009 to more than a million annually since 2013, making it one of the largest Pride parades anywhere by attendance, and it remains a distinct event from the earlier Chicago Pride Fest street festival, held on Halsted Street the weekend before
