The story

Printers Row Lit Fest in Chicago

Printers Row Lit Fest is a free, two-day outdoor literary festival held each September in Chicago's Printers Row neighborhood, near the Harold Washington Library Center. Founded in 1985 to revive a district once known as the city's printing and publishing hub, it has been produced since 2002 in partnership with the Chicago Tribune. It is billed as the largest and oldest literary festival in the Midwest.

Its scale and literary programming make it a core Illinois literature row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Printers Row Lit Fest grew out of an unusual origin: in 1985, neighborhood advocates Bette Cerf Hill and Bonnie Sanchez-Carlson created a book fair specifically to revive Printers Row, a South Loop district that had been Chicago's printing and publishing center a century earlier

02

The mystery stays covered

The Chicago Tribune took over production in 2002, and by then the fair had already expanded to five city blocks along Dearborn Street, with more than 200 booksellers and seven stages hosting over 100 free programs

03

The city starts moving

Today it draws several hundred authors, journalists, poets and screenwriters, and unlike ticketed book festivals elsewhere, admission to the book fair and literary programs remains free, a policy the festival has maintained across four decades of growth
