The story

Ohio State Fair in Columbus

The Ohio State Fair is one of the largest state fairs in the United States, held annually at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds in Columbus from late July into early August. Tracing its roots to a three-day fair in Cincinnati in 1850, it has run from the current Columbus site since 1886 and now spans a twelve-day run of concerts, livestock competitions, carnival rides, and food stalls.

It is a core statewide event with agriculture, rides, food, and entertainment.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few state fairs carry the sheer historical continuity of Ohio's, which began in 1850 under the newly formed Ohio State Board of Agriculture and has run in some form nearly every year since, pausing only for cholera outbreaks and the World Wars

02

The mystery stays covered

Its best-known tradition is the butter cow, a life-size dairy cow sculpture carved from butter and displayed in the Dairy Products building every year since 1903, joined since the 1960s by a rotating cast of other butter-sculpted figures

03

The city starts moving

The fair also hosts one of the nation's largest Junior Fairs, with more than seventeen thousand young people competing through 4-H, FFA, and other youth organizations, giving the event a working-agriculture backbone that distinguishes it from a purely commercial midway
