The story

Waterfowl Festival in Easton

The Waterfowl Festival, founded in 1971 and now marking its fifty-fifth year, fills downtown Easton each mid-November with more than one hundred exhibiting wildlife artists, retriever dog demonstrations, goose and duck calling contests, and Dock Dogs competitions. More than a thousand volunteers run the cashless, three-day event, which has generated over six million dollars for Delmarva Peninsula conservation projects.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This festival's connection to master decoy carving runs deep: the Ward Brothers, legendary Eastern Shore decoy carvers, have deep ties to the event, and a Ward Brothers goldeneye drake decoy has sold at auction here for over one hundred thousand dollars, giving the festival a serious collector-market pedigree most regional art fairs lack

02

The mystery stays covered

Running entirely across multiple downtown Easton venues rather than a single fairground turns the festival into a walking tour of the town itself, and its volunteer base of more than a thousand people, supporting a festival with only eighteen to twenty thousand annual visitors, reflects an unusually deep community commitment relative to the event's scale
