The story

Elko National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko

The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is a six-day celebration of cowboy poetry, music, and Western ranching culture held each January in Elko, Nevada. Founded in 1985 with backing from the National Endowment for the Arts, it began as the Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering and has since grown into the signature event of the Western Folklife Center, drawing ranchers, poets, and musicians from across the working West.

Cowboy poetry existed long before it had a stage of its own, passed among ranch hands as a way to turn long, isolated days of herding cattle into shared stories, jokes, and rhythmic verse recited around bunkhouses and campfires.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes the gathering is its authenticity: it grew directly out of working ranch culture rather than being built around professional performers, founded in 1985 by folklorists and working cowboy poets including Hal Cannon and Waddie Mitchell, with early funding secured through the National Endowment for the Arts

02

The mystery stays covered

Elko, a small city in Nevada's high desert ranching country, might seem an unlikely home for a nationally significant literary and musical event, but that remoteness is part of the point, drawing a genuine cross-section of Western ranchers, poets, and musicians rather than a tourist crowd

03

The city starts moving

Over four decades the event has expanded from a modest regional gathering into a six-day program of readings, concerts, dances, and workshops produced by the Western Folklife Center
