The story

Tanana Valley State Fair in Fairbanks

The Tanana Valley State Fair is Alaska's oldest state fair, running about ten days in late July and early August at College, just outside Fairbanks. Founded in 1924 by agronomist George William Gasser and farmer Harry Markley Badger, it shares the title of Official Alaska State Fair with Palmer's fair, alternating years, and anchors Interior Alaska's late-summer calendar with rides, livestock, and produce competitions.

When Alaska was still a territory, a small group of Interior farmers decided the Tanana Valley needed a proper fair.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this fair apart is its standing as Alaska's original state fair, dating to 1924, decades before statehood

02

The mystery stays covered

Held near 65 degrees north latitude, its late-July timing catches the peak of Interior Alaska's nearly round-the-clock summer daylight, which produces famously oversized cabbages and vegetables that headline the produce competitions

03

The city starts moving

Since 1985 the fair has run under a different annual theme and color scheme each year, from Attack of the Killer Cabbages to Days of Swine and Roses

04

The water draws everyone in

Because Fairbanks and Palmer alternate the official state fair title in even and odd years, this fair carries that formal designation every other summer, a quirk unique to Alaska's fair history
