The story

Germanfest Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne

A four-day German heritage festival held each June at Headwaters Park in Fort Wayne, organized since 1981 by four local German-American clubs. One of northeast Indiana's largest festivals, it draws more than 35,000 visitors for beer, polka music, and the Wienerdog Nationals dachshund race. It remains one of the region's most anticipated summer traditions.

Fort Wayne's Germanfest was founded in 1981 by four of the city's German-American community organizations working in partnership: the Fort Wayne Maennerchor and Damenchor choral societies, the Fort Wayne Sport Club, the German Heritage Society, and the Fort Wayne Turners, a gymnastics and social club tradition with roots stretching back to nineteenth-century German immigration patterns nationwide.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is run by four distinct German-American community organizations working together, the Fort Wayne Maennerchor and Damenchor, the Fort Wayne Sport Club, the German Heritage Society, and the Fort Wayne Turners, giving it deeper institutional roots than a typical single-organizer festival

02

The mystery stays covered

Its FamilienFest family day features the Wienerdog Nationals, a dachshund race that draws fans from across the Midwest specifically for the event, an unusual and widely recognized attraction that has become as much a draw as the festival's German food and beer
