The story

Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival in Frankenmuth

The Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival is Michigan's largest Bavarian heritage celebration, held every June in Frankenmuth, the Saginaw County city known as Little Bavaria for its Franconian German settlers. Running since 1959, the four-day festival fills Heritage Park and Main Street with beer tents, polka bands, dirndls and lederhosen, and two parades celebrating the city's German roots.

Its town identity and cultural programming make it a core Michigan heritage row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is the original of Frankenmuth's two big German-heritage festivals, predating the city's separate Oktoberfest by three decades and rooted directly in the community's founding by Franconian Lutheran settlers in 1845

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival still opens with a maibaum, or maypole, raising ceremony and keg tapping, features the local schuhplattler dance troupe Da Frankenmuda Fratz'n, and crowns a Bavarian Festival princess and court who ride in the closing Sunday parade

03

The city starts moving

A long-running signature is the sealed Bavarian Beer Bucket, introduced in 1979 and still sold today, a nod to a tradition that has outlasted plenty of festival trends elsewhere

04

The water draws everyone in

The event moved to Heritage Park that same year as it outgrew Main Street parking lots, and it has been voted among Michigan's top festivals by AAA's Michigan Living magazine
