The story

Dickens on The Strand in Galveston

Dickens on The Strand transforms Galveston's Victorian-era Strand Historic District into nineteenth-century London for a weekend each December, organized by the Galveston Historical Foundation since 1974. Costumed characters roam four stages of continuous entertainment, a Saturday parade features Queen Victoria, and costumed guests receive half-price admission.

Its literary, costumed, and historic-district setting make it highly distinctive.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Dickens on The Strand uses Galveston's genuine Victorian-era architecture as an unusually authentic backdrop for its Charles Dickens theme, staging the festival directly among the historic ironfront buildings the Strand district was actually built with rather than constructing a themed set from scratch

02

The mystery stays covered

Admission to the Galveston Historic Seaport's Elissa, an authentic 1877 tall ship, is included with festival entry, tying the event directly to a piece of period-accurate maritime history rather than a purely costumed reenactment

03

The city starts moving

Fifty-plus years of continuous operation, and a half-price admission incentive for costumed guests, have built a strong culture of Victorian dress among longtime attendees that few other American holiday festivals match
