Juneteenth Celebration Galveston in Galveston

Galveston is where Juneteenth began: on June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger read General Orders No. 3 there, announcing freedom for enslaved Texans two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Since 1979, the Galveston Juneteenth Committee has marked that anniversary with an annual commemoration on the lawn of Ashton Villa, combining prayer, reflection, and community leadership in the city where the holiday's history actually happened.
