The story

Arizona Renaissance Festival in Gold Canyon

The Arizona Renaissance Festival transforms a stretch of desert in Gold Canyon, east of Phoenix, into the fictional 16th-century village of Fairhaven every weekend from February into late March. Running since 1989, the festival mixes jousting knights on horseback, costumed performers, artisan craft booths, and stage shows across dozens of venues, drawing visitors from across Arizona and neighboring states to one of the country's longest-running Renaissance fairs.

Each winter, a patch of desert scrub in Gold Canyon, about forty-five minutes east of Phoenix, is reborn as Fairhaven, an imagined 16th-century English village populated by knights, jesters, and craftspeople.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike many Renaissance fairs confined to a single afternoon of jousting, Fairhaven spans acres of desert scrubland transformed with more than a dozen stages, where full-contact jousting tournaments unfold on horseback alongside comedy, music, and circus acts

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's signature Pleasure Feast offers a multi-course period-style banquet with entertainment, a rarity among American Renaissance events

03

The city starts moving

Its winter-to-spring calendar, running weekends from February through late March, takes advantage of the mild Sonoran Desert climate that would make a fair impossible in summer heat

04

The water draws everyone in

Combined with hundreds of costumed cast members and independent artisans selling handmade leather, pottery, and metalwork, the event has grown into one of the largest Renaissance festivals in the western United States
