The story

Guthrie 89er Days in Guthrie

Guthrie 89er Days is Oklahoma's annual commemoration of the Land Run of April 22, 1889, the day Guthrie itself sprang into being as tents and buildings went up within hours of the opening bell. Billed as home to Oklahoma's longest and oldest parade, the multi-day event fills the historic downtown with a carnival, food trucks and vendors, a chuckwagon feed and auction, a classic car and motorcycle show, and a big wheel race.

On April 22, 1889, the federal government opened a stretch of unassigned land in what is now Oklahoma to settlement, and tens of thousands of people lined up at the border to race in and stake claims the moment a signal shot was fired.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few American festivals commemorate their own town's founding on the exact spot where it happened, but 89er Days does exactly that: Guthrie was built almost overnight during the 1889 Land Run, when tens of thousands of settlers raced to stake claims the moment the starting gun fired, and the town's well-preserved Victorian-era downtown still stands as the backdrop for the celebration

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival leans into that origin story explicitly, drawing a distinction between Boomers, who lobbied for years to open the territory, and Sooners, who jumped the start line early, a rivalry baked into Oklahoma's own nickname

03

The city starts moving

A chuckwagon feed and a parade billed as the state's oldest and longest tie the modern event back to frontier-era Guthrie
