Nowruz Festival in Herndon

The Nowruz Festival in Herndon, Virginia gathers the Washington DC area's Persian and broader diaspora community each spring to mark Nowruz, the ancient new year tied to the vernal equinox. Founded in 2012 by Shohreh Assemi, the one-day event fills a hotel ballroom with more than 60 vendors selling Haft-Sin items, pastries and crafts, plus a full stage of live music, dance and poetry.

Shohreh Assemi launched the Nowruz Festival in 2012 at Reston Town Center, giving the Washington DC area's Iranian-American community a public gathering built around the Persian New Year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's centerpiece is its communal Haft-Sin display, the seven-item spread of sprouted greens, sweet wheat pudding, dried oleaster fruit, garlic, apples, sumac and vinegar that Persian families set out to welcome the new year, here multiplied across dozens of vendor tables so visitors can compare regional and family variations side by side

02

The mystery stays covered

Live sets from Persian classical and pop musicians run through the afternoon alongside traditional dance troupes, and a poetry stage gives space to Rumi and Hafez readings in Farsi and English

03

The city starts moving

Because the event now runs inside a hotel ballroom rather than an open plaza, it continues rain or shine every year
