The story

Prince Lot Hula Festival in Honolulu

The Prince Lot Hula Festival is Hawaii's largest non-competitive hula event, held each July at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds in Honolulu. Presented free of charge by the Moanalua Gardens Foundation, it brings together roughly fifteen halau, or hula schools, for a day of exhibition performances honoring Prince Lot Kapuaiwa, later King Kamehameha V, who is credited with reviving hula in the nineteenth century.

Prince Lot Kapuaiwa, who would later reign as King Kamehameha V, spent part of his youth at a family retreat in Moanalua Valley on Oahu, where in the mid-nineteenth century he hosted hula performances at a time when the art form faced serious pressure from Christian missionaries who viewed it as immoral.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike hula competitions that judge and rank performers, the Prince Lot Hula Festival is deliberately non-competitive, letting halau perform as offerings rather than contest entries, a structure that mirrors the festival's own origin story

02

The mystery stays covered

It honors Prince Lot Kapuaiwa, who as a young ali'i hosted hula performances at his Moanalua retreat during the mid-1800s, a period when Christian missionary influence had pushed hula toward suppression across much of Hawaii

03

The city starts moving

those gatherings are remembered as an important act of cultural preservation

04

The water draws everyone in

Presented by the Moanalua Gardens Foundation, which also protects Moanalua Valley and Kamananui Valley, the festival has run for nearly fifty years and remains completely free, drawing some of Hawaii's most respected hula schools to perform without the pressure or spectacle of formal competition
