The story

Bayou City Art Festival in Houston

Bayou City Art Festival is a juried fine-art show held twice a year in Houston, produced by the nonprofit Art Colony Association since 1997, when the event was renamed from its earlier identity as the Westheimer Colony Art Festival. The fall edition runs at Memorial Park, featuring 300 artists across 19 disciplines, live music, and a rotating food-truck lineup.

It is one of Houston's strongest public art-festival anchors.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Bayou City Art Festival traces back to 1971 as the Westheimer Colony Art Festival, a Lower Westheimer neighborhood beautification effort that eventually split into two separate events after a legal dispute over admission-fee rights in the early 1990s, leaving today's festival organizationally distinct from the unrelated Westheimer Arts Festival still held elsewhere in Houston

02

The mystery stays covered

Its juried selection process scores applications blind across 19 distinct artistic disciplines, and the festival has directed more than four million dollars to local nonprofits over its five-decade history, a philanthropic track record built into its business model rather than treated as an afterthought

03

The city starts moving

A dedicated Emerging Artist program and a Middle School Art Competition, now well into its second decade, extend the festival's juried standards down to student-level participants
