The story

Carolina Renaissance Festival in Huntersville

Every weekend from October through November, a 25-acre storybook village called Fairhaven rises on 300 wooded acres between Huntersville and Concord, North Carolina, for the Carolina Renaissance Festival. Founded in 1994, it recreates a fictional sixteenth-century European town with jousting knights, falconry demonstrations, live mermaids, and more than a hundred costumed characters woven into an interactive fair.

Its costumed village and long season make it a strong arts/culture row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's centerpiece is its scale: sixteen stages of continuous entertainment spread across a permanent 25-acre village built specifically for the fair, one of the largest Renaissance festivals by acreage in the country

02

The mystery stays covered

Three signature attractions anchor each day: mounted jousting tournaments performed by a professional troupe using a historically informed scoring system, live falconry displays featuring birds of prey, and an aquatic mermaid show

03

The city starts moving

A resident company of more than 100 costumed performers, drawn largely from the Charlotte region, stays in character as bakers, tavern keepers, a lord mayor, and a fictional royal family, giving Fairhaven a lived-in feel beyond the stage shows
