The story

Old Munichburg Oktoberfest in Jefferson City

Old Munichburg Oktoberfest is Jefferson City, Missouri's annual celebration of its Southside neighborhood's German-American heritage, run each September by the Old Munichburg Association since 2000 as its main fundraiser. Held along Broadway, Dunklin and Washington streets, the daylong festival mixes a beer garden and main-stage music with Missouri's largest dachshund derby, a vintage car show and craft and food vendors.

Jefferson City's Southside neighborhood earned the nickname Munichburg from the wave of German immigrants who settled there starting in the 1830s and 1840s, many arriving from a Bavarian town called Munchberg; local English speakers heard the name as Munichburg, and it stuck even after the neighborhood became fully English-speaking by the early twentieth century.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's best-known draw is Missouri's largest dachshund derby and costume contest, where dozens of dachshunds dressed in German-themed costumes race down a short outdoor track while crowds pack the sidelines

02

The mystery stays covered

The Muenchberg Beer Garden, named for the Bavarian town of Munchberg that gave the neighborhood its name, serves bratwurst, hot dogs and beer under tents staffed by association volunteers, while a main stage runs polka and live music through the afternoon

03

The city starts moving

The Mid Mo Old Car Club adds a vintage and classic car show along the festival's side streets, and craft demonstrations tied to the neighborhood's German building and brewing traditions run alongside food and craft vendor rows

Rhythm

Rides, parades, dress, food stalls, and family days keep it a Bavarian folk festival, not only a beer event.
