Celebration in Juneau
Celebration is a biennial cultural festival held during the first week of June in Juneau, Alaska, honoring the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples of Southeast Alaska. First held in 1982 with 200 participants, it has grown into the largest Native cultural gathering in Alaska, sponsored by the Sealaska Heritage Institute and drawing thousands for dance, art, and traditional food programming.
Celebration was first held in 1982, organized by the newly formed nonprofit Sealaska Heritage Institute as a dance-and-culture festival meant to pass traditional knowledge to Native Alaskan children in Southeast Alaska.
