The story

Rossini Festival in Knoxville

The Rossini Festival is a free, two-day international street fair held each April in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, organized by Knoxville Opera. Named for Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, it fills Gay Street and surrounding blocks with four outdoor performance stages, food vendors, and an artisan market. Since its 2002 launch it has grown into one of the region's largest spring street festivals, drawing tens of thousands of visitors.

Knoxville Opera launched the Rossini Festival in 2002 as a way to pull opera out of the concert hall and onto the street.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets the Rossini Festival apart is that it is produced by a professional opera company rather than a city arts office, so alongside jazz, gospel, and world-music acts the bill includes full operatic arias and choral works performed on outdoor stages

02

The mystery stays covered

Launched in 2002 by Knoxville Opera with roughly 6,000 attendees, it has grown into one of the largest free street fairs in the region, now drawing more than 30,000 people over a single weekend and topping half a million visitors cumulatively since its founding

03

The city starts moving

Four simultaneous stages run more than 11 hours of continuous programming, while a Journey Around the World scavenger hunt and a market of more than 75 regional artisans give it a festival footprint that spans several downtown blocks
