The story

Leadville Boom Days in Leadville

Leadville Boom Days fills the first full weekend of August with a celebration of the mining heritage that built this two-mile-high Colorado town, centered on Historic Harrison Avenue. Now in its 75th year as of 2026, it combines competitive mining skill contests, the International Pack Burro Race, parades, and a 100-plus vendor craft fair in one of the highest-elevation festivals in the country.

Leadville was built almost entirely on mining.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's mining contests are not staged novelties but genuine tests of historic hard-rock mining skills, including jackleg drilling, hand mucking, and single- and double-hand steel drilling, disciplines that directly recreate the work that once employed much of Leadville's population at over two miles above sea level

02

The mystery stays covered

It also hosts the International Pack Burro Race, the second leg of Pack Burro Racing's Triple Crown, a uniquely Colorado sport in which runners lead a loaded burro on foot rather than ride it, a tradition invented to commemorate how prospectors moved supplies through the mountains

03

The city starts moving

Few American festivals combine a working-skills competition this specific with a 75-year civic tradition

What moves first

Living ritual

The mining competitions and the pack burro race are living trade traditions rather than reenactments for show: they descend directly from the drilling and packing skills nineteenth-century miners needed to survive and work in Leadville's silver and gold districts

Water and renewal

and many competitors train specifically for these events year-round
