The story

McIntosh 1890s Festival in McIntosh

The McIntosh 1890s Festival began in 1974 as a fundraiser for the town's historic train depot, named for the decade when McIntosh, Florida, twenty miles south of Gainesville, prospered with its own hotel, school, church, and Western Union office. Now drawing an estimated 35,000 visitors and more than 250 vendors each mid-October, the festival showcases the town's 62 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

McIntosh, Florida held its first festival on October 19, 1974 as a fundraiser to restore the town's historic train depot, drawing about 4,000 people under the name McIntosh Gay Nineties Festival before organizers settled on the 1890s Festival name still used today.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

McIntosh's festival theme has genuine architectural grounding: the town's 62 structures on the National Register of Historic Places largely date to the actual 1890s prosperity the festival name references, when the small community supported its own hotel, school, church, ice house, millinery shop, and packing house alongside a resident doctor and postmaster

02

The mystery stays covered

What began in 1974 as a 4,000-person depot-restoration fundraiser has grown into a festival with more than 250 vendors and roughly 35,000 annual visitors

03

The city starts moving

The event's continuation was genuinely uncertain heading into 2026, when organizers announced permanent discontinuation before the McIntosh Town Council intervened days later to approve and schedule the festival for October 17, 2026
