The story

Mount Angel Oktoberfest in Mount Angel

Mount Angel Oktoberfest is a Bavarian-style harvest festival held each September in the Willamette Valley town founded by German and Swiss immigrants, running since 1966 and once drawing more than 300,000 visitors a year to become the largest folk festival of its kind in the Pacific Northwest.

Mount Angel sits in the Willamette Valley as a community shaped heavily by German and Swiss immigrants, many of whose descendants still spoke German at home well into the twentieth century.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Nine local business owners, several of German descent and German-speaking themselves, started the festival in 1966 with a single beer tent, seven or eight food booths and a handful of high school bands playing beneath the Fruchtsäule, a traditional harvest monument the town still erects each year

02

The mystery stays covered

Modeled directly on Germany's Bavarian Oktoberfest, which has run since 1810, the modest first event drew a startling 39,000 people, and by the mid-1980s the festival had grown into the largest folk festival of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, drawing more than 300,000 visitors annually and generating more than 1
