MumFest in New Bern
MumFest fills downtown New Bern, North Carolina, each October with arts and crafts vendors, live music, a carnival, and a parade, drawing more than 90,000 visitors across the weekend. Founded in 1979 as the Swiss Bear Festival to fund downtown revitalization, it was renamed the Chrysanthemum Festival in 1980 and shortened to MumFest by the early 1990s, running every second weekend of October since 1984.
Downtown New Bern shuts down for chrysanthemums each October in a festival that started life in 1979 under a different name entirely: the Swiss Bear Festival, a fundraiser built to pull people back into a downtown that was, by the organizers' own account, turning into a ghost town.
